First-time Winner: Egan Triumphs at Thompson
|
Thompson, CT - The NEMA LITES
traveled to Thompson Speedway for the first time this season
with heavy hearts as longtime NEMA Race Director, Cynthia
Tebbetts, who had passed away earlier in the week but left
thrilled as Brayden Egan earned his first NEMA LITES career
win.
As the LITES took the track under the lights,
the cars and stars of the division stopped on the front
stretch for a moment of silence in remembrance of Cynthia
Tebbets. Once the cars refired, and aligned in their
starting positions, Tyson Adamik in the Adamik Motorsports
#88 alongside Brayden Egan in the Egan Motorsports #59 led
the field to the green field. While going into turn one,
Egan was able to take the lead followed by Trent Goodrow in
the Keller Motorsports #44 and Adamik.
On the
following lap, on the back stretch, Jake Trainor in the Matt
Seymour Racing #1, was able to take the low line into turn
one and drive up alongside the inside of Goodrow and Adamik
on the backstretch to take over second. On the move now,
Trainor had his eyes set on closing the gap between him and
first place Egan. While on the fourth lap, as the field
remained in a tight group, Randy Cabral in the #47 was able
to take the low line into turn three to drive up alongside
the inside of Adamik and Goodrow who were racing nose to
tail to take over the 3rd position.
Over the next
several laps, as the field began to spread out amongst
themselves, Egan continued to lead the field as Trainor
followed by Cabral worked to close the gap. On lap 8,
Trainor was now on the tail of Egan and made the move to
take over first and began to run away with the lead.
As the laps began to tick down and the field worked the
high banks of Thompson Speedway, Trainor continued to lead
over Egan, Cabral, Kyle Valeri in the Valeri Motorsports
#17, and Zach Martinez in the Cataldo Racing Group #7 to
round out the top 5.
Unfortunately, on lap 20,
trouble occurred for current leader Trainor, who retired to
the infield with 5 laps remaining. As the field re-racked
and stacked, Egan chose to restart along the outside of
Cabral to work the preferred outside groove. Going into turn
one, Egan, once again took over the lead, and quickly
following behind him was Martinez who was able to take over
second. While a three car battle for third between Valeri,
Cabral, and Tiana Kibbe in the Kibbe Racing #94 where the
three raced three wide going down the front stretch and into
turn one. While going into turn two, Valeri was able to
carry his momentum through the turn to take over third. Over
the next few laps, a battle for fourth now occurred between
Kibbe, Cabral, and PJ Stergios in the Matt Seymour Racing
#29. As the three raced three wide swapping positions until
the white flag was shown, where Kibbe was able to keep her
momentum coming out of three and into four to take fourth
while Cabral and Stergios raced side by side going down the
front stretch for the fifth position.
On the next
lap, as the checkered flag waved for the first time in his
NEMA Lite career, Egan took home the coveted win, followed
by Martinez and Valeri to round out the podium.
In a
post race interview, Brayden commented on his first NEMA
LITES win, “This is definitely a relief, I have been
dreaming of this win ever since I started racing. It’s been
a long time coming and a lot of hard work over the years. I
have to thank all my crew guys, they’ve seen me finish last
and they still stick with me. Thompson has always been an
important place to me. I first started watching races with
my Grandfather and Dad here and then began racing Quarter
Midgets at the Little T. You couldn’t have written a better
story.”
Eric Egan, father of Brayden, also commented
on his son’s first win, “I feel ecstatic, this feeling is
surreal, 4 years of hard work and trying to dial the car in
every race, the competition in the NEMA LITES is tough. It’s
tough to get a “W”.
To round out the top 10 were
strong finishes by: Brayden Egan #59, Zach Martinez #7, Kyle
Valeri #17, Tiana Kibbe #94, PJ Stergios #29, Randy Cabral
#47, Mike Pernesiglio #28, Paul Scally #30, Trent Goodrow
#44, Dennis Potter #03.
Both the NEMA MIDGETS and
LITES will be back in action this weekend on Sunday, July
20th at Monadnock Speedway for the Marvin Rifchin Memorial
Race. |
