Pernesiglio Second Sweet Victory:
Back in Victory Lane at the
Waterford Speedbowl
Waterford, CT -  After two long months of weekends filled with rain and race cancellations, on Saturday, June 28th, the skies finally cleared and the sun peaked through the clouds, the Northeastern Midget Association gathered at the New London Waterford Speedbowl for the Ray Kelley Memorial.

As the NEMA LITES took the track for their feature event, Tyson Adamik in the Adamik Motorsports #88 alongside Mike Pernesiglio in the Ventotto Properties #28 led the field to the green flag. For the first two laps, Adamik and Pernesiglio raced side by side, until going down the back stretch on lap 3, where Pernesiglio was able to pull ahead of Adamik going into turn three. On the following lap, Pernesiglio began to stretch his lead, while the Dangerous One, Paul Scally in the #30, took the inside lane and Randy Cabral in the #47 took the outside lane going into turn 3 to go three wide with Adamik. As a battle for second occurred, going into turn one, Scally was able to take second over Cabral and Adamik.

Over the next several laps, a battle for fifth occurred between Tiana Kibbe in the Kibbe Racing #94 and Kyle Valeri in the Valeri Motorsports #17. As the two raced side by side over the next several laps, working to close the gap between them and fourth place, Adamik. Ultimately, on lap 9, going into turn one, Kibbe drove up alongside the inside of Adamik to take over the fourth position. While on the same lap, going into turn three, Valeri took to the inside of Adamik, took over fifth going into turn two.

Pernesiglio continued to lead the field, followed by Scally and Cabral. While a race for fourth began between Kibbe, Valeri, and Dylan Coutu in the REDline Motorsports #53, the three raced within striking distance of another, all while closing the half a straightaway lead from third place Cabral. While on lap 14, going down the backstretch, Coutu took fifth over Valeri.

Over the next several laps, as the field began to spread out amongst themselves, Scally remained close to the back bumper of leader, Pernesiglio. Unfortunately on lap 16, the caution flag flew, as the field reracked in a double file line up, Pernesiglio alongside Scally led the field back to the green flag. The two raced side by side going into turn one followed by Kibbe, who was able to take over third on the restart over Cabral. While a battle for fourth now occurred between Cabral, Valeri, and Coutu, as the three raced three wild going into turn three. While coming out of turn four, Pernesiglio battled for his position, as Scally tucked in behind him going down the front stretch and looked to take the inside line going into turn one, but Pernesiglio was able to continue his drive and pull away from Scally going down the backstretch. While at the same time, a battle once again occurred for third, between Kibbe and Cabral, where the two raced side by side for the next two laps. While going into turn one on lap 20, Kibbe took the high groove to take over third and began closing the gap between her and second place Scally. On the same lap, going down the backstretch, Coutu took to the inside of Cabral to take over fourth.

As the laps began to wind down and Pernesiglio extended his lead to half a straightaway, the checkered flag flew for the second win of his NEMA LITES career over Scally and Kibbe to round out the podium.

In a victory lane interview, Pernesiglio commented on his win, “That was a really great race, I thought after that last caution, we might have lost it, but I really wanted to win here so bad. My dad and I were nervous before the race, we didn’t know what we had, but my dad won his second race here as well, you just can’t write a better story.”

To round out the top 10 were strong finishes by: Mike Pernesiglio #28, Paul Scally #30, Tiana Kibbe #94, Dylan Coutu #53, Randy Cabral #47, Kyle Valeri #17, Ben Mikitarian #9, Anthony Trufano #59, Joey Bailey #35, and Greg Klar #99.

As the sun set and the track lights turned on, the NEMA MIDGETS took to the track for their 25 lap feature. Matt O’Brien in the Jim O’Brien & Son’s Engineering #16 alongside Mike Horn in the #93 led the field to the green flag. Going into turn one, O’Brien took the lead, while Paul Scally in the #30 took to the inside of Horn to take over second going down the backstretch. Scally remained close to the back bumper of O’Brien going into turn three. While going down the front stretch on the following lap, Scally once again looked to the inside of O’Brien going into turn one. The two raced side by side coming out of turn two, but going down the backstretch, Scally began to pull away from O’Brien and create a three car length lead over O’Brien and Horn.

While on lap three, Randy Cabral in the Bertrand Motorsports #74, made the pass for third over Horn, he was now on the back bumper of O’Brien, looking to take over second. While going down the backstretch on the following lap, Cabral took second over O’Brien.

Over the next several laps, starting from his fifth place starting position, Avery Stoehr in the Bertrand Motorsports #39, now was on the back bumper of O’Brien. On lap 6, Stoehr took the high groove going into turn three to drive up alongside the outside of O’Brien to take over the third position going into turn one.

As Scally continued to lead, Stoehr, now had his eyes set on closing the half a straightaway distance between him and second place, Cabral.

Over the next several laps, as the field began to spread out amongst themselves and the leaders navigated through lapped traffic, Scally continued his straightaway lead, Stoehr, was now on the back bumper of Cabral. Going into turn three on lap 14, Stoehr took to a place he is familiar, the high groove, and drove up alongside the outside of Cabral to take over second going down the front stretch.

With 11 laps to go, Stoehr’s race was not over yet, his new goal was to close the straightway lead between him and Scally. As the laps began to dwindle down, Stoehr worked the high groove and was now on the back bumper of Scally, looking for the opportunity to keep his momentum and make the pass for the lead on lap 20. While on the following lap, going into turn three, Stoehr, once again took the high line and drove up alongside Scally going into turn four to edge out Scally on the front stretch to take the lead.Scally did not give up the fight though, the two raced side by side for the next three laps, until Stoehr was able to pull away from Scally going down the backstretch.

As the checkered flag waved for Stoehr, he was able to increase his lead over Scally by half a straightaway followed by Cabral to round out the podium.

In a victory lane interview, Stoehr commented on his win, “All day long I was trying to be fast in practice and the heat race, and what line would work in the long run. During the race, I kind of settled back for a bit and was watching how the other cars were handling, then I looked up at the scoreboard and saw the race was only half way and thought we were further along than that, so then just got on the hunt. Now I'm really glad to be here in victory lane.”

To round out the top 10 were strong finishes by: Avery Stoehr #39, Paul Scally #30, Randy Cabral #74, Matt O’Brien #16, Mike Horn #93, Brayden Egan #3M, Joey Bailey #A1, Ethan Durocher #9, Lee Bundy #49, and Jack Dumas #77.
