White-Knuckle Showdown: Mikitarian Wins Jim
O’Brien Memorial |
North Woodstock, NH - On Saturday 9/27, the
NEMA LITES made their long-awaited return to White Mountain
Motorsports Park for the first time in nearly 20 years,
tearing into the high banks under sunny September skies for
the Jim O’Brien Memorial and the racing action didn’t
disappoint.
In a stacked 50 lap feature, Dennis
Potter #03 and Tyson Adamik #88 led the field to green.
Potter grabbed the early lead into turn one, but the battle
for second was already heating up as Mike Pernesiglio #28
pulled ahead of Adamik down the backstretch and dove to the
inside of Potter in Turn 3. By the time they crossed the
line, Pernesiglio had claimed lap one at the front.
Charging from sixth, Ben Mikitarian #9 quickly worked his
way into third and was closing fast. By lap 10, as the
leaders began slicing through lapped traffic, Pernesiglio
had built a slim lead over Potter, with Mikitarian in hot
pursuit.
By lap 18, it was a nose to tail dogfight
among the top three. Mikitarian slipped past Potter to grab
second and set his sights on the leader. On lap 20, he made
his first move, peeking to the inside down the backstretch,
but couldn’t complete the pass. A lap later, he tried again
in turn three, still no luck. Pernesiglio was holding firm.
Lap 23 brought heavy lapped traffic into the mix, and
that was all Mikitarian needed. He powered inside
Pernesiglio going into turn three and emerged with the lead.
But the fight wasn’t over.
Pernesiglio came back
on lap 26, diving low down the backstretch, but Mikitarian
held his ground on the high side. Meanwhile, Potter wasn’t
done yet either, on lap 28, he made a bold outside move to
retake second from Pernesiglio, then went three wide down
the backstretch just two laps later trying to wrestle the
lead from Mikitarian.
Mikitarian, unfazed, began to
stretch his lead as he hit clean air, pulling over a second
ahead by lap 30. But just two laps later, a caution waved,
erasing his hard-earned advantage.
On the restart,
Mikitarian and Potter led the field to green. Mikitarian got
the jump, but Pernesiglio muscled his way back into second
in turn three. Behind them, Kyle Valeri in the Valeri
Motorsports #17 moved into third with an aggressive inside
move on Potter. Soon, PJ Stergios in the Matt Seymour Racing
#29 joined the fray, taking over fourth from Potter with a
bold outside pass in Turn 3 on lap 34.
With just 6
laps to go, Mikitarian held a commanding straightaway lead.
But the battle for second was fierce, as Pernesiglio and
Valeri raced nose-to-tail, with Valeri looking for any
opening to pounce.
Then, heartbreak, a second caution
flew on lap 49, setting up a dramatic green-white-checkered
finish.
On the final restart, Mikitarian once again
jumped to the lead, with Pernesiglio hot on his tail. But it
was Stergios who stole the show, powering around the outside
of Pernesiglio on the backstretch to take over second in
turn three.
At the checkers, it was Ben Mikitarian
taking a well-earned victory after a relentless battle up
front. PJ Stergios and Mike Pernesiglio rounded out the
podium after 50 laps of nonstop, high-stakes action.
In a victory lane interview, Mikitarian commented on his
win, “This car was unbelievable tonight. I will tell you,
that last green, white, checkered, I was flat out, I didn’t
lift. This car was hooked up. I just want to thank my Dad
for all his hard work and everything that goes into the car
and my mom. It’s really good to be here at White Mountain,
it’s a really cool, really fast track. It’s cool to get the
Jim O’Brien Memorial win, this is a special race.”
To
round out the top 10 were strong finishes by: Ben Mikitarian
#9, PJ Stergios #29, Mike Pernesiglio #28, Kyle Valeri #17,
Dennis Potter #03, Brayden Egan #59, Randy Cabral #47, Dylan
Coutu #53, Paul Scally #30, and Tyson Adamik #88.
