Scally & Coutu Post NEMA Wins
at Wiscasset Speedway

Wiscasset, ME - The Northeastern Midget Association rolled into one of their favorite tracks of the season at Wiscasset Speedway last Sunday. NEMA was welcomed by the Jordan Family to not only clear blue skies, a field full of competitors, but also a packed, stand out crowd.

At the conclusion of the NEMA features, it was Paul Scally in the #30 and Dylan Coutu in the Redline Motorsports #53 who took their family owned cars to victory in the Midgets and LITES features, respectively.

As the NEMA Midgets took the track, announcer Pete Falconi introduced the stars and cars of the NEMA division. Ryan Tidman in the #83 and Derek Robbie in the #A1 on the outside pole led the field to the green flag for 25 laps around Maine's fastest track. Tidman jumped to an early led going into turn one over Robbie and Mike Horn in the #93. An early race caution brought the field back to a complete restart. As Tidman brought the field back to green, Horn, starting in the third position, saw an opening on the lower line of the track and raced side by side with TIdman down the backstretch. At the close of the first lap, Horn led over Avery Stoehr in the Bertrand Motorsports #39 and Tidman.

On the third lap, Stoehr worked to close the three car gap that was created between him and Horn while Paul Scally in the #30 worked his way into the top 3.

Over the next several laps, the field started to spread out between one another as Horn continued to set a blistering pace.

Unfortunately, on lap 11, motor trouble struck the current leader, Horn, as he retired to the infield a lap later. As Stoehr inherited the led over Scally and Randy Cabral in the Bertrand Motorsports #47, Stoehr continued his lead by half a straightaway and continued to tick off the laps.

On lap 18, motor trouble struck again for newfound leader, Stoehr, coming out of turn one, as he also retired to the infield which allowed for Scally to take over the lead.

In the remaining laps of the NEMA feature, Scally continued his lead over Cabral and Robbie by over half a straightaway to take the checkered flag.

In an after race interview, Scally stated, "The car was really good all day and we had some good luck..but glad to be able to do this with my family and have a win with my son and wife here."

In the NEMA LITES feature of the afternoon, Tiana Kibbe in the Kibbe Racing #94 started on the pole alongside Alby Ovitt in the Parker Brother's Racing #20, led the field to the green flag for 60 laps. Kibbe took the lead going into turn one with Ovitt on the back bumper followed by Danny Cuigni in the Jim O'Brien and Son's Engineering #16.

On lap 6, Kibbe continued to lead while going into turn three, Cugini took the high line over Ovitt to take over second and drove up alongside Kibbe going into turn two. Kibbe and Cugini raced side by side for 4 laps until Cugini took the lead on lap 10.

On lap 11, running his fastest lap of the feature, Cugini began to pull away from Kibbe and Ovitt. As Cugini extended his lead to half a straightaway, on lap 15, a race between 2nd through 5th occurred between Kibbe, Ovitt, Dylan Coutu in the Redline Motorsports #53, and Kyle Valeri in the Valeri Motorsports #17. While on lap 16, Coutu was on the move and took the low line going into turn three to take the third position over Ovitt. A couple of laps later, Coutu and Valeri were on the back bumper of Kibbe, but going into turn four, Kibbe pushed up the racetrack which opened up the bottom for Coutu and Valeri to take over the 2nd and 3rd positions.

On lap 20, Cugini opened his lead to more than a straightaway, just as a caution was thrown on the track which negated his open lead. Unfortunately, while under caution, Cugini came to a stop at the entrance of turn three and was taken off the track on the hook, where he retired for the remainder of the feature.

As the cars realigned for a double file restart, Coutu inherited the lead over Valeri and Kibbe. Coutu jumped to the lead going into turn one followed by Valeri and Jake Trainor in the Seymour Racing #29, but going into turn three, Trainor took the high groove and was able to take over the 2nd position over Valeri.

As the cross flags flew, Coutu extended his lead to about seven car lengths over Trainor and Valeri. A battle for fourth between Kibbe and PJ Stergios in the Seymour Racing #4 occurred, as Stergios took the low line coming out of turn four and down the front stretch to take over 4th.

On lap 33, the leaders started to encounter lapped traffic, which allowed Trainor to close the gap between him and Coutu. But a few laps later, once Coutu was in clean air, he was able to regain a few car lengths between him and Trainor.

On lap 44, Coutu had his largest lead over Trainor by 0.8 of a second, just as Coutu started to encounter lapped traffic once again, Trainor was able to capitalize on this to close in and was now on the back bumper of Coutu. Coutu was able to skillfully navigate through traffic and on lap 49, Coutu was able to regain half a straightaway lead over Trainor, Valeri, and Stergios.

On lap 52, Coutu had a second and half lead, but unfortunately the yellow flag was brought back out. As the drivers aligned for the double file restart, Coutu alongside Trainor on the outside led the field back to the green for the remaining 8 laps. Coutu got a good start and led the field into turn one while Trainor held off Valeri for second going down the backstretch.

By lap 58, Coutu regained his half a straightaway lead and two laps later, as the checkered flag flew for Coutu, he gained his second ever NEMA LITES career win, over Trainor and Valeri to finish out victory lane.

To round out the top 10, were strong finishes by Coutu #53, Trainor #29, Valeri #17, Stergios #4, Egan #59, Joey Bailey #21, Paul Scally #30, Kibbe #94, Randy Cabral #35, Matt O'Brien #61

In an after race interview, Coutu stated, "It was really nerve wracking on the last restart. I didn't know how far back Trainor was, so I was just trying to make no mistakes and hit my marks... I really can't believe it, we rebuilt and changed almost everything on the car this past week, and we didn't stop until the heat race."

The mighty NEMA Midgets and LITES are back in action at the Star Speedway in Epping, NH for the Star Classic on Saturday September 16th. Green flag racing will start at 4pm!
